THIS is Reading's new chief of police.

Former police commander Supt Steve Kirk, who has moved into a new role at police headquarters, handed over the reigns to Supt Stuart Greenfield (pictured) on yesterday (Thursday).

Supt Greenfield was head of crime and operational support for the Berkshire West Basic Command Unit and used to command the Chiltern and South Bucks policing areas.

He joined Thames Valley Police in 1985 and worked on the Close Protection Team, River Patrol, Intelligence and Firearms teams among others and will also be the night time commander at this year's Reading Festival.

Supt Greenfield said: "I'm looking to build on the excellent work of Supt Steve Kirk who has been the Reading Commander for a number of years and is a very well respected figure in the area. Put simply, I see it as my job to work with partners and key members of the community to make Reading a safer place to live, work and visit.

"Crime in Reading has fallen under Supt Kirk's leadership. However, I am aware that there is still a significant fear of crime in the area and I am keen to do anything in my power to reassure the community by tackling the issues that the affect the quality of life of our residents, such as anti social behaviour."

Chief Inspector Phil O'Neil has been appointed Deputy Reading Commander.
