GOSSIP and grub were on the menu at a pre-school taking part in a pilot project.

Pupils enjoyed a Come Dine With Me-style week of cooking, sitting down and eating at Micklands Pre-School, inviting parents and guests in to sample the cuisine and enjoy a good chat.

The week promoted the Every Child A Talker initiative, which aims to expose youngsters to a broader vocabulary and encourage parents to talk to their children more.

Pre-school pupils helped in every part of the dining experience including preparing food, making menus and laying the tables.

Pre-school supervisor, Emma Kemp, said: "This whole experience has lead to the children talking about food, the cooking process, how to lay a table, talking about menus and excitement about who was coming to lunch.

"Also it gives parents the opportunity to see what they could talk about with their pre-schoolers throughout a meal."

Liz Bradbury, mum of three-year-old Austin and two-year-old Xander, said: "It's been an excellent opportunity for the children to try new food and talk to us about it."

The pre-school has an open and fun day today (Thursday) from 11am - 2pm at its base in the grounds of Micklands Primary School in Micklands Road. Contact 0118 947 1976.
