GREENPEACE activists got the thumbs-up from shoppers who heard their anti-nuclear message.
They were out in force in Reading's Broad Street at the weekend and of 195 people who filled in their survey, 171 (87%) said the Government should cut the Trident nuclear weapons system rather than public services.
Organiser Trish Whitham said: "When faced with a massive national deficit the last thing they think the next Government should be doing is wasting £97bn on building new nuclear weapons."
The Government says Trident renewal will cost £15-20bn. Labour, UKIP and the Conservatives are committed to renewing Trident to deal with future threats to national security, the Lib Dems say it is a Cold War relic that should be replaced with a cheaper alternative and the Green Party would scrap nuclear weapons altogether.

If I had been part of the survey I would definitely have voted with Greenpeace. The last thing we need to spend billions of pounds on during a recession is new nuclear weapons.
We should be spending taxpayers money on protecting public services, schools, and hospitals, not on weapons of mass destruction.

Nuclear weapons do not protect us against terrorism or climate change or energy shortages, which are the security threats we face in the 21st century. They are a waste of money which consume money we should be using to tackle the real threats. It is Gordon Brown who needs to get real about nuclear weapons.
