PUBLIC sector union Unison has turned its fire on the Tories in Reading by buying up advertising space at scores of bus stops and shelters.
Its advert running all over the town carries a picture of an axe and reads: "Look what's in the Tories' first budget."
Unison general secretary, Dave Prentis, has nailed his union's flag firmly to Labour's mast, saying this week: "Labour's manifesto sets out serious plans for supporting the economy and dealing with the deficit through steady economic growth and fair taxation, and is in stark contrast to Tory gimmicks and Draconian cuts."
The Conservatives have been running an intensive poster campaign in Reading - first with big pictures of David Cameron and his pledge to "cut the deficit, not the NHS", then its series of "I've never voted Tory before, but..." messages, and most recently it has gone negative with attacks on Gordon Brown. These posters feature a grinning image of the Prime Minister with slogans like "I doubled the national debt - vote for me".
The Labour Party has much less cash on hand and is not running billboard campaigns.
