Skimmer found at Reading cash point
BANK customers are being urged to be on their guard after a skimming machine was found at a Reading cash machine.
The device, which slips into the card slot and allows criminals to make copies of card details, was found at the Co-operative in Whitley Wood Lane on Saturday[27]. A mobile phone had also be placed above the machine to film people as they enter their PIN.
A similar skimming device and mobile phone were also discovered on the same day at the Co-operative in Station Road, Thatcham.
Reading area crime reduction adviser John McNicholas, said: "Both devices were pretty crude in these incidents. However, this should act as a reminder to residents to be on their guard when using these machines.
"Check around the insert slot, and above it in particular, to ensure nothing has been stuck to the machine. If at all possible use a machine inside a bank or get cash back when shopping."
John's advice:
USE cash machines during the daytime if possible. It is best to use a well-lit cash point. Avoid dimly-lit deserted areas.
BE wary of people around you and do not use your card or enter any numbers if you are being overlooked.
DO not allow anybody to get involved in your transaction even if they offer to help you with it.
COVER the key pad on the machine when entering your PIN.
MAKE sure you put your card and cash away quickly - don't keep them on display.
NEVER write down your PIN or share it with anybody else.
KEEP cards and cheque books separately.
IF you notice anything suspicious at any cash machine report it immediately.
