READING West Lib Dem candidate Daisy Benson has promised to take action on child poverty if elected.

She has signed up to Save The Children's 'Poverty Kills Childhood' campaign and said: "I am delighted to lend my support to this national campaign as I've been campaigning locally for some time for more effective action to help Reading's poorest children - particularly in relation to improving children's health.

"Reading Borough Council is doing what it can but the issue needs real action at a national level to ensure that the poorest are helped out of poverty.

"After 13 years of Labour government nearly a quarter of children under 19 living in Reading are classed as living in poverty - this figure is too high and has risen under the current government despite Tony Blair's pledge to end child poverty in the UK by 2020."

Cllr Benson is also standing for re-election in Redlands ward in east Reading. She chairs the council's housing, health and community care scrutiny panel.
