FIREFIGHTERS spent 45 minutes putting out a chimney fire in Tilehurst last night.
A crew from Reading's Caversham Road station was called to a house in Skilton Road at 7.30pm after neighbours spotted flames coming out from the roof and alerted the couple who live there. Firefighters used a chimney kit to put out the flames and remove the embers.
Watch manager Doug Buchanan is warning people to make sure their chimneys are swept reguarly. He said: "Chimney fires can spread into the roof and cause significant damage.
"The chimney hadn't been swept and there was a build up of soot. The fire would have started half way up and the owners could have gone to bed without knowing."
