Stretching Herself: Sophie Cleere, by Norah Greatrix.

A YOGA teacher is at the forefront of a worldwide movement to help victims of human trafficking and modern day slavery.

Earley-based instructor Sophie Cleere will roll out her mat at Reading University Sports Park, Shinfield Road, on Saturday, March 13, from 11am-1pm for global fundraiser Yoga Stops Traffick and is urging people to join her.

More than 49 teachers in 17 countries across the world will lead synchronised classes where participants will attempt to complete 108 sun salutations - a series of linked postures which help improve physical strength, flexibility, breathing and mental well-being.

It is in aid of Indian charity Odanadi Seva Trust, set up 20 years ago to help hundreds of women and children scarred by human trafficking, domestic abuse and forced prostitution to start a new life free from violence and cruelty.

It is close to her heart because her brother Sean works for the charity and the former Reading acupuncturist will lead his own class in Mysore, India, at the same time as his sister.

Miss Cleere, 33, who has practiced yoga for 17 years, said: "The response from people has been incredible. There are so many events going on throughout the world and for Reading to be involved is amazing. It's helping us bring people together and raise awareness of yoga in the community and there will be a tremendous energy in bringing people together in one place to practice for a good cause."

In January she visited two of the trust's orphanages where staff have provided victims with food, shelter, clothing, education and the chance to find work. Yoga also plays a part in their healing process - building their self confidence and well-being.

She added: "Some of them are not able to speak because of the ordeal they have been through but they have an amazing resilience and you feel very humbled and incredibly lucky after meeting them. We never experience the things they have gone through and we are fortunate enough to do something about it."

Entrants must pay a minimum £5 sign up fee. To book a space contact the Sports Park on 0118 937 8799, email sophcleere@hotmail.com or see www.odanadi-uk.org
