TORRENTIAL rain failed to put a dampener on the annual Goring 10k today (Sunday) which attracted 1,200 runners.

The village race was filled to capacity for the first year ever and raised around £10,000 for Goring Primary School. The overall winner was Michael Osborne, from Oxford, who completed the course in 34.09 minutes.

Sir John Madejski started the race at Storton Lodge, in the north of the village, from where competitors made their way to the finish line at Bourdillon Field, off Elvendon Road.

Caversham's Alison Bird, 45, who came top of the Women's Veterans category for over 40s with a time of 41.38m, said: "It's a tough course but you just have to keep going. It helps that all along the route there was fantastic support."

The winners were presented with their trophies by Goring Primary School headteacher, Anglea Wheatcroft, and Goring businessman Bob Warmingham, who owns Warmingham Estate Agents and has sponsored the race for the past 10 years.

Mr Warringham said: "So many people put in a lot of effort to organise the race and it's nice to see their hard work rewarded. It has grown and grown every year and is a fantastic event for the village."
