SCORES of neighbours in three south Reading streets are without power after a fire tore through an electricity fuse box in the early hours of this morning (Friday).

A crew from Whitley Wood fire station went to Stanhope Road, Whitley, shortly after 12.30am after neighbours raised the alarm.

No-one was hurt but engineers have cut off power to neighbouring Barnsdale Road and Weardale Close while they fix the underground appliance.

Company spokesman Duncan MacDonald could not confirm what caused the blaze, but hoped to restore power by lunchtime. He said: "We apologise for the interruption and we are doing everything we can to restore supplies to our customers as quickly as possible."
