DETECTIVES are keen to trace a van driver who could hold vital clues into an early morning fast food store robbery where two men made off with hundreds of pounds of cash.

The robbers swooped on McDonald's in Oxford Road yesterday (Sunday) at 5am and tricked a woman manager into unlocking the doors before forcing their way in and stealing money from the till.

But Reading CID's PC Mandy Brownlie is keen to trace the driver of a white transit van with a red and white striped roof and bottom which pulled into the restaurant's car park shortly after the attack.

She said: "The driver entered the car park at 5.09am and left at 5.10am. We believe they may have approached the front doors of the restaurant and possibly seen one of the offenders.

"There were also several people waiting by the McDonald's and Lidl sign when the offenders left the area. I need to trace these people to see if they can help the investigation."

She added: "I would also like to speak to anyone who was in the area of this part of Oxford Road, between 5am and 5.15am."

Detective Sergeant Ashley Hannibal said: "This was obviously a distressing incident but I would stress that this type of incident is rare in Reading and that we are doing everything possible to catch the offender."

The robbers were white and spoke with European accents. One wore a white workman's hat, a dark jacket, dark tracksuit bottoms, Addidas trainers and yellow workman's gloves. His accomplice wore a dark hooded zip up jacket, light blue jeans, a cream baseball cap and carried a black sports holdall.

Anyone who witnessed the attack should contact police on 0845 8 505 505 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
