New EU battery dumping law goes live today

USED batteries can no longer be dumped in the bin from today because under new EU legislation they must be recycled at an authorized recycling point.

The Batteries Directive, which comes into force today, is aimed at stopping 600 million batteries ending up every year in British landfill sites..

All shops and traders selling more than seven packs of batteries a week will have to provide waste collection bins so customers can dump their duds when they buy replacements.

Local collection points include Smallmead Household Recycling Centre in south Reading and West Berkshire Council's waste recycling centre in Newtown Road, Newbury.

Vince Armitage, divisional vice president of Varta Consumer Batteries, said: "Households need to be aware that next time the batteries run out in their remote control, alarm clock or smoke alarm they can't just head straight for the bin.

"All batteries, regardless of size or purpose, have to be recycled at specified drop-off points."

Other collection points in the Reading area include Robert Dyas, Broad Street, Reading; Robert Dyas, Crockhamwell Road, Woodley; Baumatic Ltd, 6 Bennet Road, Whitley; Redlands Primary School, Lyford Road, Reading; Co-op, Erleigh Road, Reading; Henry Street Garden Centre, Arborfield.
