READING should jump at the chance to bid for Government money to help people without broadband get on the web, a councillor has urged.
In December, the Smarter Government report announced a £30m investment in 'digital inclusion', providing free laptops and broadband, and bids opened last week.
Lib Dem housing spokeswoman Cllr Daisy Benson urged Reading Borough Council to take up the offer.
She said: "After 13 years of Labour rule there are still hundreds of families - particularly in south Reading - who do not have access to the internet, simply because they cannot afford it. The digital divide in Reading is real. When I visit people in their homes to discuss problems and issues many of them do not have computers or email. This means many people in Reading are missing out on opportunities other people take for granted from accessing health and council services - to looking for work or booking a holiday. This will also impact on children's ability to learn and keep pace with wealthier counterparts."
Council spokeswoman Sarah Bishton said: "The council is aware of the new Home Access Grant and is mobilising a range of staff, partners and businesses to ensure that every family with children eligible for free school meals, who is entitled to the free laptop and broadband in Reading, is encouraged and assisted to apply for the grant."
Parents can apply by phoning 0333 200 1004, or, if they can access the internet away from home, at: www.homeaccess.org.uk/Information-for-parents
