A CHARITY fundraiser has been hailed a "star" for collecting hundreds of thousands of pounds for war heroes.

Pauline Palmer, treasurer of the Caversham branch of the Royal British Legion and organiser of the branch's Poppy Appeal collections, was praised by secretary Ron Jewitt.

Last November's total has been tallied, revealing Mrs Palmer's volunteers collected £36,000 - up from £33,000 the year before and £30,000 in 2007.

Last year, the 66-year-old grandmother co-ordinated more than 50 volunteers and 400 collection tins and, since she started the job in 1998, has brought in more than £300,000.

Mr Jewitt said: "Pauline would be the last person to pick up the phone and shout about it but I would like to give her a pat on the back. Pauline has a real way with people, she's people-friendly. She's a star."

Members next meet on Monday at 6.30pm at Caversham Working Mens' Club in Church Street. Every meeting has a buffet, quiz and bingo or other activities.
