THE ancient boilers which heat Reading's Central Pool are being ripped out and replaced with energy-efficient ones.

The two current boilers, both in danger of "imminent failure" according to a Reading Borough Council report, have broken down many times recently and are themselves patchworks of the Battle Street complex's four original boilers.

It will cost £65,000 to replace the boilers, which will be paid for using the £12,000 estimated annual energy savings via the Carbon Trust's Salix Fund, which lends money to public bodies for such projects. Reading Borough Council is using its emergency procedures to install the new boilers because the old ones are so close to collapse.
