COUNCIL tenants facing charges for communal lighting and possibly cleaning have two extra weeks to comment on the proposals.

The charges would effect the 30% of council tenants who do not get housing benefit. Lib Dem housing spokeswoman Cllr Daisy Benson's pressure led to the consultation deadline being extended from tomorrow (Friday, January 18) to Friday, January 29.

Cllr Benson said the charges will hammer the "working poor", adding: "In a recession it is not fair to impose more charges when millions of pounds worth of rents are going to the Treasury, not on maintaining council housing in Reading."

One tenant, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "These charges are inhumane and inappropriate. They are yet another tax on the hard-working families that Labour claim they want to protect."
