STUDENTS at Reading University are being advised to return from vacation using public transport - because of the freezing conditions on campus.

Vice-Chancellor Gordon Marshall appealed: "Leave your cars at home."

Most students will be returning over the weekend to start the new term on Monday to be met by a carpet of ice and frozen snow.

Mr Marshall sent out an email this afternoon to thousands of students, advising: "Do not bring your own car onto campus. But if you are being dropped off by car, please use the main entrances to the University, not the halls car parks, and bring only essential and easily portable items.

"The Sports Centre car park has been made as accessible as possible for drop off only. You will need to walk to your hall so please ensure you bring appropriate footwear."

Many minor routes into the university are "impassable", and most students will not be able to gain access to their halls car parks. Catered students who are normally required to return to halls on the Sunday before term, can make special arrangements to return tomorrow (Saturday) instead in a bid to avoid threatened further snow.
