Overtime for dustmen to beat snow backlog

DUSTMEN are working overtime across Reading borough to handle a delivery backlog caused by last week's snow and ice.

The council is asking anyone whose bins were not emptied to leave their bins out until they have been collected.

Any excess refuse from grey bins should be placed in bags, and boxes should be used for material which usually goes in the red recycling bins. These bags will be collected if left beside the bin.

Bins should be put out as normal on the scheduled collection day, but delays are expected in areas worst hit by the snow and icy conditions last week.

Borough environment and sustainability leader, Cllr Paul Gittings, said: "We know it's very frustrating for residents who have had to wait for their bins to be emptied over the past week and we thank them for their patience.

"Our crews are working extremely hard to catch up with waste collections and we ask people who have not had their bins emptied on the scheduled day to leave them out for emptying.

"The extreme weather conditions made it impossible to keep to our collection schedules but please be assured that we are doing everything we can to make sure rubbish is collected as quickly as possible."
