FIREFIGHTERS have warned dog owners to keep their pets away from rivers and canals after having to rescue a dog from a Thatcham waterway.
A crew from Newbury fire station and the Caversham Road, Reading's water rescue crew dragged a brown Cocker Spaniel from a sluice gate in Station Road today (Wednesday) soon after 4.40pm after the animal got into difficulty in the water.
The dog, named Bailey, was reunited with its woman owner before firefighters took him to a nearby vet.
Caversham Road's firefighter Lee Bodenham said: "Owners should keep their dogs out of the water at all costs, especially in this cold weather. The owner was also in the water and what was an animal instinct could have escalated further had the boat crew not pulled the dog out."
