READING'S postmen are completing their rounds today despite industrial action taking place across the county.

But delivery and collection staff at Reading's three delivery offices in Gillette Way in Whitley, Suttons Business Park in Earley and Loverock Road in west Reading will stage early-morning walkouts on Saturday.

Royal Mail has condemned the strikes saying "significant progress" was being made before the talks between the management and Communication Workers Union (CWU) broke down last night.

Managing director of Royal Mail Letters, Mark Higson, said the industrial action is "playing havoc with customer confidence" and urged the CWU to come back to the table.

He added: "We have repeatedly asked for a common sense approach that allows a strike-free Christmas while we talk about the future, yet even that seems too much for the CWU to accept."

Speaking from the picket line outside the Reading Delivery Office in Gillette Way on Friday, CWU collection rep Wayne Levy, who has 20 years' experience, said the strike action was a "necessity".
