OFSTED inspectors have withdrawn a primary school from its 'must improve' list.

Katesgrove Primary School was given notice to improve in June last year but a repeat inspection says standards are now satisfactory with a good capacity to get better.

More than 90% of the 334 children who go to the school in Dorothy Street are from minority ethnic backgrounds and more than half have English as a second language.

The Ofsted report, published after last month's inspection, reads: "This is a highly caring and supportive school and an outstanding feature is the excellent quality of pastoral care, guidance and support and safeguarding procedures which ensure that pupils feel very safe and are highly valued."

It added: "The highly effective headteacher, ably supported by the

deputy headteacher and senior team, has effectively developed an ethos which is single-mindedly determined to overcome past under-performance."

The inspectors found pupils are confident, very polite, well-behaved and enjoy going to school and contributing to their community.

Headteacher James Telling said this week: "We are delighted to have had the notice to improve lifted.

"The continuing hard work by all of the children, staff, governors and parents has been recognised, and we are now looking forward to improving our school even further."

The school had been criticised for its achievement levels in English, maths and science, but inspectors said these had improved, although maths standards were still low.

They also urged staff to share best practice throughout the school and try to stretch the brightest pupils further.
