FLOODLIT football pitches will be built at Prospect School despite neighbours' fears about traffic, noise and light.

Seven reduced-size pitches will be open until 10pm on weekdays and 8pm on Saturdays and Sundays, with a clubhouse open until 8.30pm on Sundays and 10.30pm every other night.

Residents sent 20 objection letters and campaigner Lydia Boscoe told Reading council's planning committee on Wednesday last week: "We object to the hours of use, particularly since the smoking ban has led to groups congregating outside these kind of facilities."

Company Play Football was given permission for a larger version of the scheme in 2007 but then applied to move it nearer the school. Spokesman Steve Bennett said: "We will provide new extended facilities for pupils and the community."
