CAMPAIGNERS opposed to plans for 96 homes on a reservoir site held a street party to raise the profile of their fight.

Members of Save The Bath Road Reservoir group and people living near the site in Coley attended the party in Western Road on Saturday to object to Thames Water's application for homes.

Campaigner Mel Woodward said: "If local residents really want to preserve this wonderful green space for current and future generations now is the time to act and object to this application - we want to leave Reading Borough Council in no doubt about the strength of local feeling."

Protesters have until Monday to object to the application before it is considered by the council later this autumn. They say the site, covered in grass and trees, is necessary as a "green lung" and should be preserved as a wildlife site.

Reading West Tory parliamentary candidate Alok Sharma said: "Behind the fun was the very serious objective of raising awareness of our collective opposition to Thames Water's plans to build 96 homes and commercial space."

Thames Water spokeswoman Amy Dutton said the company had taken into account residents and ecologists' concerns. Ms Dutton said: "We cannot simply abandon this site, letting it deteriorate and become unsafe. We owe it to our customers to get the best price for this land."
