CONMEN dressing up as police officers or "water board" officials have been foiled by alert householders.
The imposters made at least four attempts to trick people in Tilehurst and Emmer Green on Wednesday last week but were spotted by suspicious would-be victims.
The bogus police officers were wearing clothing that, at first glance or to someone with poor sight, might resemble a uniform and they flashed what could have passed for an identity card.
They ware described as two white men, in their early twenties with dark hair, spotty complexions.
Police crime reduction adviser John McNicholas said: "My advice is to closely check any identification before letting anyone into your home - don't be persuaded by something resembling a police badge or identification from a water company."
Mr McNicholas stressed that the "water board" no longer exists. Call 08458 505 505 to get callers' details verified.
