A RETIRED couple had a close escape when a car smashed into their bungalow just yards from their bedroom.

The pair in their eighties were asleep at 3.15am today (Saturday) when the car careered off Wokingham Road in Earley, crashed through their front wall and ended up with its bonnet in their lounge, before the driver tried to reverse out.

Ken Brown, 80, said there was no sign of anyone in the car by the time they had climbed out through the rubble and added: "We went all through the Blitz in London and then this.

"What I want to say, you couldn't report it."

Emergency roof supports have been put in to hold up the ceiling of the 175-year-old cottage at the corner of Henley Wood Road, originally built for railway workers.

Mr Brown and wife Sylvia, 81, have lived there for 23 years but will now be staying with relatives in Bracknell while they wait to hear if and when it can be repaired.

The fire brigade, police and ambulance service all attended the scene and Mr Brown also praised their neighbours for coming to help.

He said: "They've all been very good, all caring."
