MORE than a tenth of Reading's rubbish ends up as compost - which is now on sale for use in the gardens from whence it came.

Garden compost is on sale at £3.50 for 40 litres at Reading's Smallmead waste recycling centre in Island Road for a trial period.

The three councils which make up the re3 waste partnership - Reading, Wokingham borough and Bracknell Forest - collect 17,000 tonnes of waste a year from the kerbside which is turned into compost, 12.3% of the total.

If the trial is successful and gardeners take advantage of the cheap compost, recycling bosses will consider extending the scheme.

Borough environment leader Cllr Paul Gittings said: "By buying the new compost, residents are helping to complete the recycling loop as our green waste is being returned to the soil.

"While it's important that we all recycle as much as possible, it's also crucial that we're able to make good use of what we recycle. I hope that all the keen gardeners in Reading will take advantage of this excellent offer, so it can be continued in the future."

The compost will be on sale for four weekends and on Mondays from 10am-7pm, starting on Saturday. Payment is by exact change only, and the offer is while stocks last. Compost will also be available from the partnership's other recycling complex in Long Lane, Bracknell.
