Flat plans stoke traffic worries

A SECOND new housing development in Southcote is adding to traffic fears for neighbours in Bath Road and Southcote Lane.

In addition to plans for 100 homes, a racquets club and new classrooms in the grounds of the Elvian School, a separate application has been submitted for 53 apartments to replace the unoccupied block of 1960s flats at James Court in Bath Road.

James Court developer Crest Nicholson admits one worried neighbour told the company: "My main concern is the impact on traffic flow, increased risk from turning traffic, and the effect of yet more kerbside parking in Southcote Lane."

Agent Vincent Verster said the company's transport assessment and travel plan have considered potential traffic issues. On top of 53 parking spaces reached from Southcote Lane, ideas include appointing a travel co-ordinator, car sharing and possibly offering discounts on green transport.

Opposition to the larger Elvian scheme is growing and Southcote councillor John Ennis has told council planners: "I wish to object on the grounds that a traffic survey has not been completed at the appropriate time and date to gauge the potential traffic problems, and the negative impact excess traffic will have on residents of Southcote Lane and adjoining roads."

Neighbours protested at a public meeting last week and Elvian spokeswoman Anna Sabine said the school will be "very glad to address" any concerns with planning officers.
