A COUPLE thought to come from the Reading area were still seriously ill in hospital today after suffering an horrific machete attack in Tobago.

The Newsday newspaper on the sunshine Caribbean island says relatives of Miriam and Peter Greene are flying to their bedside following the murderous attack on Saturday.

The couple were in their Bacelot holiday home when they were targeted and after the attack Mrs Green, suffering horrendous facial injuries and with her jaw dislocated, crawled from the house into the street to raise the alarm. Her husband's injuries are so severe he has been placed in an artificial coma to assist his recovery.

The couple are believed to have a home in Wellington, Somerset, but have been dividing their time between stays in Tobago for 10 years.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is warning holidaymakers about the attack on its website and said: "You should be aware that there are high levels of violent crime, especially shootings and kidnappings.

"British nationals have been victims of violent attacks, particularly in Tobago where law enforcement is weak."

But the warning added: "The authorities on the island are taking positive steps and the response times of the police have improved."

Newsday reported today that sniffer dogs are being used to to search the house for clues but there does not appear to be much missing, and police say the motive for the attack is still unclear.
