TEN homes were evacuated after an electrical fault started a fire in the ground floor power room of a block of flats today.

The blaze at Hunter's Hill, Burghfield Common, was reported at 12.30pm and fire crews from Dee Road and Whitley Wood stations escorted residents to safety while Southern Electric engineers worked to shut off the power.

Dee Road watch manager Mark Jones said: "A resident saw smoke coming out and called us and several other people nearby smelled burning.

"At first it looked as if it had gone up into the roof but it was contained in the electrical room. We think it was a fault. It was quite an old junction box."

The firefighters spent two hours making the area safe and Mr Jones added: "Everybody was fine. They were let back in but there was no electricity."

The block is managed by Sovereign Housing and a representative arrived later to meet residents.
