AN ELDERLY man who fell into the basement at his home last night had to be rescued on a stretcher by firefighters.

The man, thought to be aged around 75, slipped down the stairs at his home in Baker Street, west Reading, at around 10pm.

Firefighter James McGuinnity from Caversham Road fire station said: "It was quite a confined space, with narrow corridors. The ambulance got us there for a bit more manpower.

"I think his wife was there with him.

"He was chatting away but obviously he was in a bit of pain."
