STAFF at a Reading orthodontist are "devastated" after being told their colleague was on the flight lost over the Atlantic.

Health bosses confirmed that Dr Jose Souza was on the passenger list for Flight 447 from Rio to Paris which disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean in the early hours of Monday morning.

Dr Souza had worked at the Reading Orthodontic Centre, Erlegh Road, for four years and staff at the practice today were visibly upset at the news.

Business manager Jane Hawthorne read out a statement which said: 'The staff at the Orthodontic Centre are devastated by the news.

'Our thoughts are with the family and friends of our highly respected colleague. He will be greatly missed.

'Pending further confirmed information regarding the situation, patients whose appointments have been cancelled will be contacted individually. Emergencies will be dealt with by other clinicians at the Practice. The Orthodontic Centre remains open.'

Dr Souza qualified as a dental surgeon in Rio De Janeiro in 1996. He worked in oral surgery until 1998, when he started his post graduate diploma in paediatric orthodontics at the university of Paris and the Eastman Institute of Paris.

Since 2001 he had been working full time as an orthodontist for adults and children in Brazil, in France and in the UK. He joined the team at the Orthodontic Centre since January 2005.
