TWO sets of landlords are celebrating this week after winning gongs for their hardwork to put their businesses at the top of their game.

Allan and Lesley Quelch of The Reformation at Gallowstree Common were Newcomers of the Year, while Graham and Julie Martin of The Red Lion at Peppard took the Business Builder of the Year title.

Their triumphs in the Brakspear Pub Company Annual Awards were announced at a presentation dinner at The Crown in Playhatch, where both couples were given a Welsh slate plaque to display at their pub.

They also won a weekend at a country hotel.

Judges felt Mr and Mrs Quelch had an outstanding track record at The Reformation, their first pub, transforming it and putting it back at the centre of village life after 20 months at the helm.

At The Red Lion, Mr and Mrs Martin were praised for their proactive approach to building the pub"s trade and offering high standards that always exceed customers" expectations.

Tom Davies, Brakspear"s commercial director, said: 'Only 10 of the 145 pubs in the Brakspear estate receive one of our annual awards, so our winners should be proud of their achievement.

'Both Allan and Lesley and Graham and Julie have demonstrated impressive levels of enthusiasm and commitment and thoroughly deserve their success.

'Despite the trading downturn, good pubs with talented tenants continue to do well.'
