MOTORISTS in one part of Reading will be starting the day on Thursday with a taste of patriotism - free St George's Day cakes.

The scheme is the brainchild of Andrew Young from Abbey Windows Thames Valley, who is teaming up with colleagues and business associates to hand the cakes, made by Reading's Warings bakery, to motorists in slow moving traffic during the morning rush hour in Portman Road.

Mr Young, whose comoany is based in Cardiff Road, said: "Last year we handed out hundreds of cakes promoting out national day and creating a feel good factor.

"We want to give everyone something to think about and to have a positive start to the day.

"With so many negatives around us it's too easy to forget the friends, family and neighbours we can rely on, our rich heritage and legacy of castles and historic buildings that bring tourists half way around the world.

"A green and pleasant land with varied landscapes from rolling hills and mountains to winding rivers and beaches.

"St George's Day could be a common day for all to celebrate together."
