STAFF at 11 off-licences were hit with £80 fines for selling alcohol to a 16-year-old during a sting operation.

Eight shops out of 12 tested in the Oxford Road area of Reading, and all three approached in Coley, happily sold booze to the boy on Saturday before neighbourhood police officers and Trading Standards officials called time.

In addition to the fines, the individuals who sold the alcohol will now have to meet the police's licensing department and the neighbourhood inspector.

Sgt Zahid Aziz, from the Oxford Road and Coley neighbourhood teams, said: "This type of operation is designed not only to enforce the licensing law and ensure its compliance, but it is also useful in assisting us to curb alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour by young people in these areas.

"This is particularly important as we begin to prepare for the summer, and the neighbourhood team will continue to monitor these and other premises in the area."

He is appealing for anyone who knows where alcohol is being sold to underage youngsters in these areas to tip off the neighbourhood team via the police number 0845 850 5505.
