AT LEAST 500 homes were left without phones and some without internet access after bungling thieves tried to steal underground cables.
Two men in high-visibility jackets and a flatbed-style lorry were seen removing a manhole cover and trying to take the cables at around 5am on Monday morning.
Instead of pulling the valuable wiring clear they only succeeded in severing two cables and causing chaos in Caversham Park Village and Emmer Green.
BT spokeswoman Emma Littlejohn said 400-500 homes were affected when the men cut through lines, and that engineers had been working in shifts around the clock in Buckingham Drive and Peppard Road to re-instate them.
Ms Littlejohn said yesterday (Wednesday) that engineers hoped to have all phone lines restored by the end of the day.
Police are studying CCTV footage showing the two men. Anyone with information should call 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
