PROTESTERS who campaigned against controversial plans to demolish a Victorian church will soon find out if it has been given protected status.
Around 360 people signed a petition against Elim Pentecostal Church's plan to demolish St Saviour's Church in Berkeley Avenue, Coley, to build a two-storey community centre with space for youth and children's work.
The row began last summer and in the autumn Reading Borough Council asked English Heritage to assess the red-brick church and recommend to the Government whether or not it should be listed. Clara Ramsaran, spokeswoman for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, said: "We are expecting a decision from the Secretary of State quite shortly"
English Heritage spokeswoman Debbie Holden said: "When the decision is announced we will be able to release our report on the church."
