STAFF have been praised by Government inspectors for the "safe, happy and inclusive" environment they provide for young children.

The Earley Montessori School was rated 'good' by Ofsted, the second highest rating it can give.

The school, for youngsters aged two to five, meets at St Nicolas Church Hall in Sutcliffe Avenue each weekday morning.

Its 10 part-time staff abide by the Montessori ethos, which focuses on adapting a child's learning environment to match his or her level of development.

Manager Katherine Boxell said: "We had no notice at all of the

inspection, in fact it was on our first day back after the Christmas

holidays. But everything went really smoothly."

Principal Shauna Fosker said: "We are delighted.

"It's our first inspection under Ofsted's new-style report so to come out as 'good' was very good."

The report's findings include:

The school promotes a safe, happy and inclusive environment through its policies and procedures.

Staff are caring and understand individual children's needs.

Learning and development preparation is prepared with children, which helps to ensure they take part in activities they enjoy.

The school is aware of the need to strive for continuous improvement.

Staff at the Montessori School work together as a team and support one another well.

Partnership with parents is strong. Parents take an active role, participating in sessions relating to their professions and cultures.

Children are listened to and form warm relationships with their friends and the staff who care for them.

Youngsters' safety and well-being are thoroughly considered.

Children behave well and show respect for each other, staff and their surroundings.

Staff demonstrate a good understanding of the needs of individual children. They are strong role models and caring towards the children they look after.
