NEIGHBOURHOOD police have stepped up patrols after nine muggings and are also targeting drug dealers in Katesgrove.
Neighbourhood specialist officer PC Stacey Bancroft said the attacks happened around Elgar Road, Kendrick Road and Whitley Street over Christmas and added: "The robberies occurred in the late afternoons going in to early evenings when it is dark, so if walking at night, think of your personal safety.
"Stick to main, well-lit roads, walk in pairs if possible, and be aware of your surroundings - do not have headphones in or be on your phone.
"The team have been conducting extra patrols in the area to identify possible suspects and provide reassurance to pedestrians in the area."
The team, led by PC Richard Noone, also carried out a drugs raid in Collis Street on December 22, and discovered class A and C drugs. Two men aged 23 and 26 have been arrested and bailed to attend Reading police station on February 20.
PC Bancroft said: "The team will continue to act on any information received from the community to help stamp out drugs in the area."
Anyone with any information about drug dealing or the muggings should contact the team through the 24-hour police enquiry centre on 0845 850 5505.
