HOUSING leader Cllr John Ennis is Labour's choice to replace Pete Ruhemann.

The children's services leader stepped down last week, before the opposition Tories and Lib Dems could vote to depose him, following a series of damning reports into child protection in Reading.

Cllr Ennis, well-known to many of Reading's council tenants and tenants' associations, will be replaced as housing leader by fellow Southcote councillor Deborah Edwards.

The nominations must be approved by a majority vote at tonight's full council meeting, meaning that either the Tories or Lib Dems must vote with Labour.
