A CAR hurtled down a hill and straight into a freezing cold lake.
Two 17-year-old boys in the sinking Vauxhall Astra managed to escape the car with help from maintenance worker Mark Lee after it crashed into Maiden Erlegh Lake at 2pm yesterday (Wednesday).
Park ranger Grahame Hawker said: "They were coming down Andrews Road, but didn't make the sharp turn into Lakeside, and instead went straight into the lake.
"It was a good job Mark was around, he jumped into the freezing cold water and helped get the door open so the boys could get out. They were a bit shaken but fine."
His colleague Terry Gough said: "It's vital the oil or petrol doesn't contaminate the lake, so we're hoping it's recovered as soon as possible."
Police were called to the scene, and the car was recovered from the lake this morning.
