MORE than 3,000 teachers flocked to Reading at the weekend for the largest science conference and exhibition in Europe.

The Association for Science Education's (ASE) annual conference was hosted at Reading University over three days, in a giant temporary hall with 3,000 metres of cable for the variety of features and exhibits.

Tony Leaney, ASE executive director, said: "Reading has a brilliant can-do attitude and the organisation of the event was superb.

"People were incredibly excited by what they were seeing and what they were hearing."

The Whiteknights campus not only hosted the event but university staff played their parts too, with science lectures given by 20 experts from various departments including food biosciences, meteorology, construction management and systems engineering.

This year's theme was Getting Practical; How To Make Science Teaching Come Alive!, and there were research updates, cutting-edge experiments from esteemed scientists and hands-on practical teaching experiences.

There was also vigorous debate on the Government's new science diploma and primary curriculum.

Mr Leaney added: "It was fantastic. There was a real buzz around the place.

"The attendance was really good and the university was spectacular."
