THE Goring, Woodcote and District Lions Club's 10k run on Sunday proved so popular, more than 100 runners who tried to enter on the day had to be turned away.

The 500-athlete capacity race was started by Henley MP, John Howell, just outside Langtree School in Woodcote.

Thousands was raised for Macmillan Cancer Care and volunteer from gardening charity Greenfingers collected £80 by selling tea at Woodcote Village Hall.

First over the line was Marcus Maxwell, of the RAF Athletics Association in RAF Benson, in 35 minutes, 26 seconds, while the first woman was Handy Cross Runners member, Samantha Amend, from High Wycombe, who finished in 41 minutes, six seconds.

For more winners, a full report and photographs of the event, see tomorrow's Reading Chronicle.
