A COUPLE who became millionaires after winning the lottery brought some festive cheer to a Reading hospice in the shape of a champagne-filled Christmas hamper.

Annette and Terry Rooke, from Calcot, presented staff at Duchess of Kent House in Liebenrood Road with the hamper which includes truffles, chocolates and plenty of wine.

Terry, a retired Reading Prison officer, who along with his wife won nearly £2.5m on the National Lottery in August 2006, said: "We have been very fortunate so it's nice to be able to do things like this for a such worthy cause.

"We had a friend who became ill in the summer and spent her last few days in Duchess of Kent House. It was our first experience of a place like that and we were surprised at how relaxed it was and how nice all the staff were.

"As Christmas comes around you think of others and I remember when I was a prison officer and I used to work on Christmas Day and Boxing day when really I wanted to just be at home.

"Staff at the hospice will work throughout Christmas but hopefully with this hamper they will know that people are thinking of them."
