Religious responses to the credit crunch

RELIGIOUS responses to money worries and job insecurity will be explored at a meeting tomorrow.

Reading Interfaith Group invites people of any faith or none to join in the discussion at its annual Autumn Celebration.

Secretary Sarah Griffin said: "The theme this year - Living in a Material World - has been chosen in response to the present economic situation which is causing considerable insecurity and hardship for many people.

"Speakers from very different faith backgrounds will contribute their own insights on how we should respond to the challenge of changing times. As with all of life's experience, there will be something we can learn from recession and perhaps having to manage with less."

On October 9, the Church of England reported a 70% increase in visitors to its website's debt advice section. It also noted that the number of visitors to its online prayer page - which includes a new prayer about money worries - had increased by more than a quarter.

The Autumn Celebration will include opportunities to discuss the ideas and to visit information stalls about the different faiths. Guests are also invited to bring food - ideally vegetarian - to share afterwards.

Reading Interfaith Group has nearly 70 members of more than a dozen different faiths, including Christians, Muslims, Hindus, pagans and humanists.

The free event the Friends Meeting House in Church Street in Reading town centre at 3pm. The group's AGM will be in the same place at 7.30pm on Thursday, November 20.
