TRY OUTS for a new professional theatre college take place on Friday.

The Thatcham-based Read Dance and Theatre College opens at the County Studios in west Reading in September and more auditions take place on July 4 - with one scholarship for dancing and one for singing up for grabs.

The winners awarded the scholarships will have to pay just half the cost of the three-year course, which aims to rival London-based colleges at a lower price.

Directors Helen and Jamie Read said: "Our training is based on 20 years combined experience as actors, dancers, singers, West End performers and teachers. Read Dance and Theatre College offers more than similar London colleges and costs less. It's a realistic way for the greats of tomorrow to reach the performing professionalism they aspire to."

The Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre course is open to students aged 16-plus and all students successfully entering their 3rd year on the course will be given professional opportunities such as a UK tour and a part in a production at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Auditions will include a ballet class and a jazz class and successful applicants will then be recalled to sing. All applicants are asked to prepare two contrasting musical theatre songs and bring sheet music for a pianist to accompany them. Successful applicants at this stage will be recalled for the final round - a two-minute contemporary monologue. The panel of judges will ask questions and give feedback.

Fly on the wall footage of hopefuls preparing for their audition will be shown on the Read Dance and Theatre College website.

Applications for an audition slot need to be made online at www.rdtc.org.uk
