TRAVELLERS continued to cause annoyance in west Reading this week as five caravans moved into Tesco's access road.

The vehicles appeared at around midday today(Wed 13) at the new superstore in Portman Road but as it is private property the police were powerless to do anything about it.

Police spokesman Adam Fisher said: "This is an instance of civil trespassing so it is up to the land owners to seek eviction."

Tesco manager Jez Butwell said: "We have told our head office who will be organising a bailiff to come down in the next day or so to serve them with an eviction notice."

The caravans are at the side of the car park on the stores access road for delivery lorries, adjacent to the ongoing landscaping work.

One of the workman, who asked not to be named because of fear of reprisals, said: "It is ridiculous. The kids are running around the machinery such as our digger, while they are in use, and putting themselves at serious risk. It is extremely dangerous.

"They are also taking our tools and vandalising the place. We asked them to keep out the way and leave our stuff alone but they just swear at us."
