THIS year's Reading Half Marathon already looks set to be a winner - with every single one of the 15,000 places taken up by runners hoping to score a personal best when they cross the line.

But anyone wanting to get in on the action still has a chance, because they can raise money for a good cause by running for one of the charities which have places available in the 26th annual event, on Sunday, March 2.

Athletes can run for Sue Ryder Care, Leukaemia Research and two of the event's official causes, CLIC Sargent, which cares for children and young people with cancer, and the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund, among other good causes.

The Mayor of Reading's Fund is also one of the race's official charities, this year benefiting young people, along with the Duchess of Kent House Trust hospice in west Reading and the Emmer Green-based Pancreatic Cancer UK.

And there are still some places free in the GreenPark Challenge, a 2.8 kilometre run for all the family around the business park to the south of the Reading borough.

The half marathon will follow the same course as last year, starting at GreenPark and taking in Whitley, Reading University's Whiteknights campus, the town centre and west Reading before finishing at the Madejski Stadium.

Last year's race saw more than 14,000 runners raise more than £70,000 for a host of charities.
