Royal Jews, by Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain, minister of Maidenhead Synagogue, tells the tales of Jews in Berkshire from 850 years ago – starting with Hakelot of Reading in 1163.

Dr Romain said: “It had been assumed that local Jewish life started in the 19th century – but in fact individual Jews have been here for 850 years, starting in 1163.

“I have been making notes and jotting things down for almost 20 years, but only started writing around two years ago.”

The 396-page book commemorates the lives of Jews in Reading past and present – exposing everything from a dangerous religious romance in the Middle Ages to the experience of Jewish refugees in the town during the Second World War.

Dominican friar, Robert of Reading, is the focus of one such tale, which follows his conversion to Judaism after falling in love with a Jewish woman.

The loved-up pair are forced to flee abroad as the intolerant world of 1275 still considered intermarriage a sin.

Another influential Jewish character is Rufus Isaacs, who brought the town to particular prominence in the early 20th century.

He is the only ‘commoner’ – starting off as a ship’s boy – to make rank as Marquess of Reading – and his statue still stands in Eldon Square opposite the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

Jewish life has thrived in Reading ever since the Middle Ages with three notable Jewish MPs featured in the book, including the 19th century Francis Goldsmid, Rufus Isaacs and Ian Mikado.

Dr Romain added: “It’s a fascinating story that has not been told until now.

“A surprising number of famous names litter the pages, as well as hundreds of others who quietly made their mark.”
