November 29, 1963 – Shop staff want £1 more – “Several hundred Reading shop assistants and managers have hopes of a delayed Christmas present – in their wage packets.

They are the staff of multiple grocery stores which will soon consider a claim for another £1 a week submitted by the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers.

The claim is expected to be settled in the New Year, Mr. C. Mitchell, the union’s area organiser, told our reporter this week.

About 100,000 grocery trade workers are affected nationally, but he could not give the local figures.

He said, however, that obviously quite a large number of men and women in Berkshire grocery stores stood to benefit.”
