THOUSANDS of people across the borough paid homage to those who gave their lives in the line of duty at Remembrance Day services and marches over the weekend, but 50 years ago this week Reading’s usual service was adapting to a new venue due to bad weather...

November 15, 1963 – Reading pays its homage to the fallen – “For the first time in a number of years Reading’s Remembrance Day Service was held at the Town Hall instead of at the War Memorial in the Forbury.

This decision was taken because of the adverse weather which necessitated the cancelling of the march-past.

After the service, wreaths were laid on the steps of the War Memorial by various representatives.

The Rev. G. W. Webber, president, Reading and District Free Church Council, who conducted the service, spoke of the people who died in the wars.

“Those whom we remember today laid down their lives in the hope, in the belief, that by their doing so they would be paving the way for a world in which their children could live in peace,” he said.
